About Astrodome
The Astrodome opened in 1965 as the world's first fully enclosed, air-conditioned sports stadium, earning the nickname 'the Eighth Wonder of the World.' Grass couldn't survive under its roof, so the field was eventually covered in a new synthetic surface called AstroTurf, a name that stuck around long after the Astrodome itself stopped hosting baseball.
