About Bennett Park
Bennett Park opened in 1896 at Michigan and Trumbull Avenues, named for former Detroit catcher Charlie Bennett, the first player to use a chest protector. It seated just 5,000 fans at first, later expanding to about 14,000, and served as home to the Ty Cobb-era Tigers during their American League pennant runs of 1907, 1908, and 1909. The wooden ballpark was demolished after the 1911 season and replaced on the same site by Navin Field, later known as Tiger Stadium.
