Fantasy Drafts & Multiplayer: What Would You Like to See?

Started by Harlin (joined · 239 posts · 389 karma) , ago

We're considering fantasy drafts, mixed-year drafts, and multiplayer for ActionSims, and I'd like your input before we start building anything.

How would you want these features to work? What would make them fun and keep you coming back?

I'd really like everyone interested to participate in this discussion, share ideas, and respond to each other. The more input we get, the better we can understand what you actually want to play.

Let's hear your ideas!

I am really interested by a fantasy draft in a pool of players from one season (and not mixed-year drafts) : need to have have a good ability for computer-managed teams to draft players when i draft for my team.

Would this be for solo play only? You would have your drafted team playing against other cpu managed teams who also went through the same draft at the beginning of the season. I tend to think this could be doable. Thanks!

a fantasy draft for just one season not mixed-year. Head to Head play would interest me. AI managers need more flexible.

Head to head as in 2 players connecting to the site from different locations? or a sort of Zoom style play where one player controls it with live input from the other player on the Zoom session?

zoom for sure but connecting to the site would be great.

I prefer drafts from all seasons to create fun what-if projects. i guess I don't understand why both single season and multiple seasons cannot both be possible as they are in OOTP, Action PC Baseball, APBA PC Baseball, PureSim Baseball, and Diamond Mind. I'll also comment on my YouTube channel and help you by asking for community input.

Keep up the great work!!

Thanks for the comment. I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around it. Not sure what you mean by multiple seasons here -- do you mean draft any player from multiple seasons or continuity of seasons into multiple? We'll probably end up having one simple draft season mechanism first and then consider making it more complex over time.

Multiplayer would be nice of course since your game offers almost everything that STRAT Max does. But I really would like a draft mode to cover the entirety of baseball with the option to choose just one season - in other words flexibility!

wow you are amazing i just found this site, im an oldtimer, i use to play micro league baseball and strat, this is amazing!!! i hope it is ok to ask a few questions, will you have a draft feature soon? my league use a 10 team league, with mlb players, that owners draft there players from what ever year you choose for simulation., and i will the owner be able to log in and set there lineups and adds/drops, i heard of something called baseball commissioner HQ will your game work with it?

Harlin (joined · 239 posts · 389 karma) , ago

Thanks for the kind words! I think I'm hoping to come up with something coherent that makes sense for most rather than having 3 different draft modes. I've never heard of Baseball Commissioner HQ. When you say work with it, I assume BCHQ is some kind of management system?

A lot of interesting ideas here. What does everyone think about multiplayer?
I know SOM has this feature, but it can be a little problematic. Both players need to agree on a time to play, commit to finishing the game, and perhaps use Zoom to communicate even though each player is controlling the game from their own computer.
The more I think about fantasy drafts and leagues with multiple human owners, the more I think we may need to tackle basic head-to-head multiplayer first and build from there.
What do you guys think?

I would agree

I want to be able to select (draft) a player from any team in any year for a fantasy team. For example, I would like to create a league of fantasy teams of Hall of Fame players using their "best" season, or a league where each team uses players from any season who played for that franchise.

I am in two Strat-O-Matic (SOM) Baseball leagues. One uses players from the SOM Baseball HOF Roster, Heroes 1-3 Rosters, and Negro Stars rosters. You can view that league's results at https://sites.google.com/view/geezer-league-baseball/. The other league uses players from SOM Baseball Career Historical Rosters to form teams for various franchises. You can view that league's results at https://sites.google.com/view/franchise-league-baseball/.

I am in two Strat-O-Matic Baseball (SOMB) leagues that play head-to-head (human versus human). SOMB lets you connect two computers using the SOMB NetPlay feature. The computers give the defense computer access to set the defense, that is, make any changes, and then give control to the offense to make any changes. The offense then requests the at-bat result. This mode requires the Windows app to be installed on both computers and the software to be at the same level.

You can use the current version of ActionSims Baseball to play head-to-head (human versus human). We have used this method with SOMB when only one league member had the Windows app installed. The computer without access to the game uses remote desktop software, such as AnyViewer, TeamViewer, or Google Remote Desktop. I have used AnyViewer on one computer to access ActionSims Baseball on another computer and play a game.

Hmm... since human vs. human is already possible with the current version, I’m leaning toward implementing the draft feature next.
My thought for draft mode is to let the player choose the year range they want to draft from. As BeatlesEternally suggested, that could be a single season, a specific range of seasons, or potentially all available seasons.

Does "draft mode" mean the computer selects players (roster members), or do humans pick them?

Harlin (joined · 239 posts · 389 karma) , ago

replying to @Orphan58

It would be both. A human player/user would make his choice when his turn came around.

Orphan58 (joined · 31 posts · 60 karma) , ago

A "grammar Nazi" comment. I am sometimes confused by the use of "game" and "player". Does "game" mean "Cardinals versus Dodgers" or "ActionSims Baseball"? Does "player" mean a member of a roster or a person who uses ActionSims Baseball? Context usually defines what these words mean. Too bad English doesn't have words that cover these different uses.

Harlin (joined · 239 posts · 389 karma) , ago

lol ... yeah they could be both I suppose.

Harlin (joined · 239 posts · 389 karma) , ago

Ok, we think we have enough of an idea from all this to get started on planning. If anyone else wants to add more here, feel free to. I'll come back and check from time to time. And of course, I'll update as we work through this.

1. If possible, a way to play inter-era games in a common run environment, i.e. the 1968 Cards and the 2011 Cards played in disparate eras, so a way to pick a neutral/common era, or even a year, to base the stats on for such cases.

2. Could you make the print more readable in-game if we choose Light mode?

Thanks...GREAT game!!!

Harlin (joined · 239 posts · 389 karma) , ago

Hi metranil, thanks for the kind words and the suggestions! Both are good ones. This thread is focused on fantasy drafts and multiplayer, so I'll track these separately so they don't get lost. A neutral or user-chosen run environment for cross-era matchups is something I want to look into, and I'll take a look at light mode readability in-game as well. I'll follow up once I have more on both.

Hopefully everyone here knows by now that the draft seasons are ready. Please let me know if you find any bugs.
